(Uncle Dutch) Slay 15 May 1942 - Last rites for William A. (Uncle Dutch) Slay, age 75 years, were held Wednesday at three o'clock at Pleasant Hill, ward two, Rev. C. W. Williams and Rev. R. T. Pynes of Many, Rev. W. J. Ross of Pleasant Hill and Rev. J. F. Laurence of Oakdale officiating, interment Pleasant Hill cemetery, Dennis-Green funeral home directing. Pallbearers were: J. B. Vandegaer, Elden Dees, Jeff Spier, Milton Belisle, Edd Lee and Clifton Massingill. Honorary pallbearers were: Louis Pynes, Dan Pynes, E. M. Fraser, H. T. Calloway, Robert Jackson, William Laurence and Ed Salter. Surviving are wife, Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Slay, and eleven children; nine daughters, Mrs. Ella Murphy of Hornbeck, Mrs. Mable Vidler of Shreveport, Mrs. Bertha Salter of Zwolle, Mrs. Carrie Westbrook of Florien, Mrs. Linda Pynes of Smackover, Ark., Mrs. Maude Thedford, Mrs. Allie Sirmon, Mrs. Lee Wagley and Mrs. Louise Wagley all of Many; two sons, D. D. Slay of Many and A. A. Slay of U.S. Marines, San Diego, Cal., one brother, R. C. Slay of Hornbeck; 22 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mr. Slay, or (Uncle Dutch) as he was known to his many friends, had been in ill health for a long period, being confined to the bed for the past four months, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Allie Sirmon, at 10:35 Tuesday morning. Mr. Slay was from the sturdy pioneer type, always having in mind the betterment of community and parish. He was active in civic and political matters, was a member of the parish democratic committee for several years and a member of the board of supervisors of elections at the time of his death.
