All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** PFC Rotheria Sowell, Jr. (photo) PFC Rotheria Sowell Jr., 21, of Many, was killed, following a scuffle with civilians at Fort Hood, Tex., early Sunday morning, June 22. According to a family spokesman, the local soldier, and several buddies had attended a party, when they were approached by several civilians. The scuffle ensued, and Sowell was stabbed once, resulting in his death. He was the son of Hazel Sowell and Rotheria Sowell Sr., both of Many. Following graduation from Many High in 1977, where he was a member of the Tiger basketball team, Sowell enlisted in the United States Army. Funeral services for the serviceman were held Saturday, June 28, at 1 p.m., at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church. The funeral oration was delivered by the Rev. Willie Thrash. Serving as pallbearers were members of the Fort Polk Honor Guard. Interment was in the church cemetery, under the direction of the Thomas Mortuary. Survivors of the soldier, other than his parents, are his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Calvin Sowell of Natchitoches; three brothers, Michael Sowell, Andrew Sowell, and Ricky Sowell, all of Many; his grandmother, Mrs. Ellie Hamilton of Many; his grandfather, Mr. Amarshall Sowell of Robeline; 12 aunts; 8 uncles; and a host of cousins and friends.
