The Rev. Wayne Duet will officiate. Mr. Silas passed away at his home at 3:52 a.m., Monday, April 15, 2002. Interment will follow at 4 p.m., in St. Joseph Cemetery in Many. Mr. Silas was born on October 18, 1912, in Many. He moved to New Iberia about 1942, and retired to Erath in 1970, following 46 years of service with Brown and Root Inc. He is survived by his widow, Thelma L. Silas of Erath; three sons, Daniel G. Silas and his wife Anne of New Iberia, David J. Silas and his wife Sandra of Jonesboro, Ark., and Johnnie E. Silas and his wife Alesia of Knoxville, Tenn.; two daughters, Loretta S. Babin, and Effie M. Silas of New Iberia; two step sons, Norris Baudoin and wife Eve of Perry, Robert Baudoin and wife Shiray of Erath; and one step daughter, Emily B. Norris and husband Jessie of New Iberia; three sisters, Lucille Procell of Many, and Gertrude Ruston, and Ida Spears, both of Shreveport; 24 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren; 16 step great grandchildren; one step great-great grandchild. Mr. Silas was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Elizabeth Livingston Silas of Many; two brothers, Lee, and Jessie Silas of Many; two sisters, Mary S. Toby of Many, and Lizzie S. Casey of Houston, Texas; and one granddaughter, Tina Y. Buford of New Iberia. Mr. Silas had a small farm near Erath, where he enjoyed gardening and raising chickens, doves, and exotic birds. He was affectionately known in the community as the "Cat Man" because of his huge heart, and his inability to turn away any animal in need. He fed any stray animal that came by, and doctored many of God's creatures back to good health. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Mr. Silas' name be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St., Suite 200, Lafayette, La., 70503. Pallbearers will be Kevin Silas, Guy Bonin, David Silas, Aston Silas, Matthew Silas, Christopher Baudoin, Kirt Broussard, and Conrad Babin II.
