He was a graduate of Normal College in Natchitoches, now know as Northwestern State University, with a B A degree and after serving three and one half years in the Army Air Force, he went on to received his Master's degree from Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. Salter taught business two years in the Pleasant Hill High School and came to Zwolle in 1938 as a Business Teacher and Coach. He became principal of the Zwolle High School in 1949 where he served until and 1970, moved 1970 and moved on to Zwolle Elementary School when the Zwolle school system was divided into three separate schools. After 39 years in the Sabine Parish schools, the original Mr. Z. H. S. retired and left the titles of t4acher, coach and principal. This name was given to him when the staff of the 1969-70 Hawks' Flight proudly dedicated the Annual Yearbook to this man because of his high ideals, enthusiasm, and personal concern meant so much to them. Mr. J. W. was a member of the Zwolle First Baptist Church where he was a faithful worker in all capacities. Just a few short months ago, he was ordained a Deacon in the Church and as Brother McCoy stated in his memorial services, "He knew God had laid his hands on him." The respect he earned over the years was evidenced in his crowning as the Tamale 1982, Fiesta 1982 Tamale Fiesta King. Today he has exchanged this crown for another crown in Glory. His contribution to our children of yesterday, and our children of today, will also shine in our children of tomorrow because he cared. The loss of J. Woodrow Salter will be felt, not only by his family, but by the entire community and parish because of the Christian life he led.
