All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** James Kirk Salter 16 March 1962 - James Kirk Salter, 45, of Eunice, Louisiana, brother of Mrs. Juanita Edwards, was killed March 8 when his light plane became entangled in guy wires of a short wave radio tower on takeoff. Mr. Salter was vice-president and drilling superintendent of the Circle Drilling Company and had been employed by them for the past 17 years. According to witnesses, Mr. Salter's plane made a short bank to the left, struck the guy wires and crashed. Dr. E. J. Derouen, Jr., acting coroner, said Mr. Salter died instantly from Multiple internal injuries. Kirk was known in oil circles throughout South Louisiana, having moved from Negreet, Louisiana to Eunice 17 years ago. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Eunice, member of the Leesville Masonic Lodge No. 240, member of the American Petroleum Institute, member of Eunice Chamber of Commerce and was on the Board of Directors of the Eunice Country Club. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church, Eunice, at 3: p.m. Friday with Rev. Robert Bengston, pastor, officiating. Rev. Bengston, is the son of Rev. W. H. Bengston, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Many, La. Burial was in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Eunice, Louisiana. Survivors include his wife, Helen Cobb Salter, formerly of Pleasant Hill, La., one son, Kirk Salter, Jr., of Eunice, four brothers, Leon of Shreveport, Earnest of Eunice, F. E. of Kinder, and Norman of Lafayette, six sisters, Mrs. Ruth Lacour of Oklahoma City, Devonia Williard of Siloam Springs, Ark., Leona Wright of Shreveport, Mrs. Exa Diebel of New Orleans, Mrs. Thelma Davenport of El Paso, Texas and Mrs. Juanita Edwards of Many.
