Charged with murder in connection with the shooting was Davis Coker, owner of the fishing camp. Sabine Parish deputy Elwin Patterson, who investigated the incident, said the shooting apparently resulted from an argument over a boat rental. Coker was released from the jail on a $5,000 bond. Patterson said Shumway was shot once in the chest with a 25 caliber automatic pistol, and died instantly. The investigation is continuing, with Chief Deputy Sheriff, Alfice Brumley, Elwin Patterson, and Converse Chief of Police, Guy Snelling.
