The victims were Gerald Sanbell, 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Troy Sanbell, and Gary Withers, 10, who lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Emma Withers. A neighbor passing the spot in an automobile earlier in the morning, noticed the two young boys digging the cave, but failed to see them when she returned less than an hour later. On close examination, she saw Gary's feet sticking out of a pile of sand, and she and a passing motorist dug the two boys out of the cave. Vernon Parish officers said Gerald was all the way in the cave when it collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and Gary was dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. The cave had been dug about five feet deep into the side of the embankment, and about three feet of sand had collapsed on them, officers said. The spot was less than a mile from the Hornbeck city limits. Both boys are students at Hornbeck School.
