Smith, became Sabine Parish's second traffic fatality for 1972, Friday night. According to state Police Sgt. C. J. Miller, Smith was traveling north on U. S. Hwy. 171, just north of Florien, when his pickup truck crossed the center line, and collided with a car driven by Ronald E. LaCour, 19, of Natchitoches. LaCour and his 18 year old wife, Kathy, his only passenger, were taken to Confederate Memorial Medical Center in Shreveport, where they were reported in serious condition. The accident occurred at 8 p.m. The aunt of Mrs. Kathy LaCour called the INDEX Monday morning, and reported the Kathy had regained consciousness for a little while Sunday, but Ronnie had not. Ronnie is living by machine only, and if he lives, he will only be a living vegetable. This couple had been married for only six weeks. Funeral services for Mr. Smith were held Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m., in the Middle Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. H. H. Tibbitts officiated. Interment was in Middle Creek Cemetery, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lilliace Smith of Fisher; one daughter, Mrs. Alvis Chevallier of Fisher; one son, Billy Gene Smith of Pasadena, Calif.; two brothers, Jack Smith of Fisher, and Guy Smith of Robeline; and two grandchildren. Mrs. Christene Crittenden of Florien reported to the INDEX Wednesday morning that her niece, Kathy, is now out of intensive care, and has gained consciousness, although she had lung surgery Monday. LaCour is still living by machine only. They are both in the Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport. Mrs. Crittenden asks that everyone remember this young couple in their prayers.
