Smith, 65, died in a house fire, March 12, about 3 p.m., near Hatcher. Sheriff George Cook's office received a call about 3:25 p.m., that a house was burning in the Hatcher community, and there may be a man in it. Sheriff Cook and Deputies Dub Jeter, and Floyd Terrell arrived at the scene about 4 p.m. The Logansport Volunteer department had arrived earlier, at 3:45, but the house had already burned. They could only keep it watered down in an attempt to locate the body. It was found in the southwest corner of the house, which was Mr. Smith's bedroom. Roland Patrick of Converse, who lived near, was the first to reach the burning house, about 3 p.m., but it was already to far gone for him to get near. It was found that Smith had been able to remove a TV, and a chair from the burning house, and apparently had gone back inside for more, when he was overcome. He has a medical history of heart trouble and emphysema. Parish Coroner, Dr. Walter Poimboeuf arrived at the scene about 4:30 p.m., and the body was released at 5:30 p.m., to the Drewett Funeral Home in Mansfield. Fire Marshal Jack Hilton of the Leesville unit arrived at the scene about 6 p.m. Also aiding Fire Marshal Hilton in his investigation Monday night, and Tuesday, was Converse City Marshal Guy Snelling. It was decided that the fire caught from something that was cooking on the stove.
