Smith A 66 year old Zwolle resident has been listed as the eleventh fatality in Sabine Parish for 1977, according to Troop H of the Louisiana State Police in Leesville. Killed in a two vehicle collision on La. Hwy. 482 on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 3:31 p.m., was Carmen L. Smith. Mrs. Smith was a passenger in a 1971 Toyota Corolla station wagon driven by Sharon F. Ezernack, 21, also of Zwolle. Mrs. Ezernack suffered severe injuries. According to the investigating officer, Trooper James D. Napier of Troop H, the Ezernack vehicle was struck from behind by a 1970 Chevrolet, driven by Larry D. Malmay, 18, of Zwolle. Upon impact, the Toyota rolled over, went airborne, and then came to rest near the highway. Occupants in the Malmay vehicle were a 16 year old juvenile from Noble, and Glen P. Meshell, 19, also of Noble. Malmay, nor his passengers were injured. Upon investigation of the accident, Trooper Napier discovered that drinking was involved in the accident. He charged Malmay with driving while intoxicated, negligent homicide, and resisting arrest. Malmay allegedly scuffled with the trooper when he was being arrested at the scene of the accident. William H. Malmay, a bystander at the scene, allegedly tried to help Larry D. Malmay resist arrest, and he, himself was charged with interfering with a police officer, and resisting arrest. Larry D. Malmay's bond was set at $10,000, and William H. Malmay's bond was set at $3,500. Both were bonded out of the parish jail on Monday, Oct. 17. The accident is still under investigation. Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were held at the Memorial Baptist Church of Zwolle on Monday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Walker Ledford officiated. Burial was in the Beulah Cemetery, under the direction of the Warren Meadows Funeral Home. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Frances Ezernack of Leesville, Mrs. Juanita Manshack of Noble, and Mrs. Elaine Sepulvado, and Mrs. Thelma Rivers, both of Zwolle; two brothers, Edward Lovelady of Zwolle, and Cecil Lovelady of Many; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Crnkovic, and Mrs. Audrey Oakes, both of Leesville, and Mrs. Ada Rogers of Many; 22 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
