Elias Wesley Sandel, Sr., of Amite died Wednesday, Oct. 29 at North Oaks Hospital in Hammond. He was born on Nov. 5, 1917 in Florien. Memorial services were held Saturday, Nov. 1 at Prospect United Methodist Church, Florien with the Rev. William R. Boyd and the Rev. John Koelemay officiating with interment following at Prospect Cemetery. Military graveside services were conducted by the Sabine Chapter #21 of the DAY. The Rev. Sandel was a Elder in the United Methodist Church and the Southern Methodist Church for 35 years, serving in Alabama as well as Louisiana. The Rev. Sandel received his early schooling at Florien. He graduated from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. He received his master of education from Louisiana State University and did doctoral work in history and law at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He and his wife were co-authors of 11 history and geneological books. A veteran of World War II, he served with the US Army Air Corps for four years and was decorated with the Air Medal and Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and ten battle stars. He was a former commander of the VFW in Natchitoches, a Kiwanian, a Rotarian, a Mason and Shriner. Survivors include his widow, Mary Eleanor Williams Sandel of Amite; two sons. Dr. Elias Wesley Sandel, Jr. and wife, Lucie of Chicago, Ill. and Troy Edward Sandel of Amite: one daughter, Cynthia E. Sandel David and husband, Mark of Jacksonville, Fla.; one grandchild, Sara Victoria David; one brother, Johnson Monroe Sandel of Florien; and four sisters, Daisy Snelling of Blanchard, Ethel Haun of Haughton, Martha Flagg of Blanchard, and Laura Scott of Natchitoches. The Rev. Sandel was preceded in death by one brother, Jesse Oliver Sandel, Jr. He was the son of Jesse Oliver, Sr. and Slice Peterosn Sandel of Florien. Pallbearers were the Rev. Sandel's nephews. Any planned memorial can be made to the Louisiana Methodist Children's Home in Ruston. Warren Meadows Many, La.
