Sanders, Chief Justice (Retired) Chief Justice Joe W. Sanders died Wednesday, June 8, 1994, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 79, a resident of Baton Rouge, and a native of Pleasant Hill. He was a retired Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court, and a U.S. Army veteran. Visiting, at Welsh Funeral Home, 6700 Florida Blvd, was 4:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, with Masonic services at 5:30 p.m. Visiting at First Baptist Church was 10 a.m. until religious services at 2 p.m., Friday, conducted by the Rev. Perry F. Webb Jr., and the Rev. Chris Andrews. Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park. He was survived by wife, Marie S. Sanders; a brother, Frank T. Sanders, Pleasant Hill; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Lud Sanders; two brothers, Dr. O. L. Sanders Jr., and Fred S. Sanders; and three sisters, Mrs. Ozie Lee McIntyre, Mrs. Lola Mae Dyer, and Mrs. Sally DeMers. Pallbearers will be Tom F. Phillips, Dr. W. A. Sistrunk, David Sanders, Sidney Sanders, Carey J. Messina, Ben R. Miller Jr., and Dr. Moss Bannerman. Honorary pallbearers will be Justices of the Louisiana Supreme Court, and other members of the Louisiana Judiciary; members of the Baton Rouge Bar Association, Dr. Tom Quaid, Dr. Gerald Miletello, Dr. Steven Gremillion, Dr. Robert Grissom, Leon Hebert, Harvey Posner, and Robert J. Vandaworker. He was the First Judge of Baton Rouge Family Court from 1954 until 1960, Associate Justice of Louisiana Supreme Court from 1960 until 1979, and House of Representatives (Sabine Parish) Louisiana Legislature from 1940 until 1944. He was past president of LSU student body, member of Louisiana, and American Bar Associations, Theta Xi fraternity, Woodmen of the World, Capitol Lodge No. 399 F&A.M., Baton Rouge Consistory, Acacia Shrine Temple, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Amvets, American Legion, and First Baptist Church of Baton Rouge.
