S/Sgt. Robert Herndon Sanders died in Vietnam, where he had been stationed with the famed Green Berets since last October. He had previously completed an overseas tour in Korea. The soldier had been in the Army for seven years. Military graveside rites were conducted, following the funeral services, in the Beulah Methodist Church, June 23. The Rev. G. C. Berly, and the Rev. C. F. Shirley officiated. A memorial service was held at the JFK Memorial in Ft. Bragg, N. C., June 20. Survivors include his widow, Rose Marie Sanders of Laurinburg, N. C.; one son, Robert Sanders Jr.; and a daughter, Robin Michelle Sanders, both of Laurinburg; his mother, Mrs. Margaret Darnell of Houma; his father, Cecil Sanders of Lake Jackson, Tex.; and a brother, Charles E. Sanders of San Clemente, Calif. S/Sgt. Sanders, prior to Army service, lived for a time with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Dan W. Barton of Marthaville.
