All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Mrs. Noel Tipton Mrs. Noel Tipton was killed, and her husband, who is chief deputy for the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Department, was seriously injured when a pulpwood truck crossed into their lane of traffic Friday, July 26, at 7 p.m. The Accident happened on State Hwy. 6, 11.3 miles west of Many. Sgt. C. J. Miller, and Sgt. Jerry Rains investigated the accident for the Louisiana State Police. Mrs. Tipton was dead at the scene. Her husband was rushed to Many Clinic by Sabine Ambulance Service, and later in the night, transferred to Schumpert Hospital in Shreveport. Sheriff Harold Sandel said he visited Tipton this week, and he is improving. He will probably be in the Shreveport hospital for several more days. Tipton, who was driving a Sheriff's Department car, was traveling west, when the truck driven by Carrage Moore, 44, of Hemphill, Tex., Negro, traveling east, attempted to make a left turn onto State Highway 475, and cut into the left front of the Tipton car. Miller said the left front wheel of Tipton's car was 5 ft 6 in. from the center line in his lane of traffic, on impact. After the impact, the car Tipton was driving traveled 7 ft. The point of impact was 57 ft. west of the center line of State Hwy 475. Moore told the investigating officers that he had drank a half can of beer about an hour before the wreck happened. A passenger in Moore's truck, which was not loaded, was James Noble, 30, a Hemphill Negro. A witness to the accident was E. H. Warr of San Augustine, Tex. The 1967 Dodge Tipton was driving was a total loss. About $300 damage was done to the truck. Moore was charged with negligent homicide, and driving a truck with no brakes. He is lodged in Sabine Parish Jail. Funeral services for Mrs. Tipton were held Monday, July 29, at 11 a.m., in Many's First Methodist Church, with the Rev. John B. Kolemay, and the Rev. J. C. Skinner officiating. Burial, under the direction of Warren Meadows Funeral Home, followed in Many Cemetery. Survivors, other than her husband, are a son, Noel Tipton Jr. of Westfield, N. J.; a daughter, Mrs. Martha Bird of Many; two brothers, James C., and William W. Holt, both of Bastrop; two sisters, Mrs. Weimar Wilson of Zwolle, and Mrs. H. E. Harriman of Hamburg, Ark.; and four grandchildren. Pallbearers were Melvin Wright, C. B. Byrd, R. J. Petty, T. M. Phillips, Harold Sandel, and Wallace DeLatin.
