All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Mrs. Maude Slay Thedford Mrs. Maude Slay Thedford of Many died in her home on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000. She was a lifelong resident of Sabine Parish, born at Toro, on Oct. 28, 1903 to W. A. "Dutch" Slay (born in Wayne County, Mississippi) and Martha Elizabeth Nettles Slay (born in Toro). Mrs. Thedford was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Douglas DeWitt "Ted" Thedford, a World War I Veteran (born in Tyler, Texas). Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Edwina Thedford of Arkadelphia, Ark. and Anita Rose Jaworski of Highland Village, Texas; one grandson, Charles A. "Chuck" Poche' Jr. of Dallas, Texas; two sisters. Lee Slay Wagley of Many and Louise Slay Wagley of Uvaldi, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Thedford was retired from the U. S. Postal Service after 29 years of service. She had taught in the school systems of Sabine Parish after completing her teachers certificate from Normal State Teachers College (now Northwestern State University) in Natchitoches. She was one of the six charter members of the local American Legion Auxiliary, she was a member for over 64 years. In 1994 she received the 50-Year Gold Eastern Star. She was a recently presented with a lifetime membership in NAREF (National Association of Retired Federal Employees.) Mr. Thedford had been a member of First Baptist Church of Many since 1932 where she taught the Esther Sunday School Class for about 35 years, sang in the choir and served on numerous committees. Services were held Monday, Jan. 24 at First Baptist Church of Many with the Rev. Joe Ratcliff of St. Francisville, officiating, assisted by Dr Edwin Scott, pastor of Many First Baptist Church. Music was provided by Dr. Steve Garner, Ouachita Baptist University, Ms. Susan Clark of Jackson, MS and Mrs. Glenda Merriman of Many. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were nephews and great nephews, Steve Westbrook, Jr., Gene Pynes, Wade Pynes, David Pynes, Loye Vidler, L. C. "King Vidler", David Slay, Phillip Slay, J. M. "Bucky" Slay, Charles Wagley, James Wagley, Mack Wagley, A. A. "Dutch" Slay, grandson C. A. "Chuck" Porh', Jr. and brother-in-law, Fred Wagley. Interment was at Many Cemetery.
