Three local Negro men, Sambo Aldredge, Chip Taylor, and Fred Harris, were visiting on Aldredge Circle in Many, when Aldredge and Harris began arguing. Taylor was an innocent bystander. According to Sheriff George R. Cook, Aldredge told Harris that his brother, Boots Aldredge had paid for Harris' trailer and car payment of a water tax. Harris was arguing with Aldredge, when Boots drove up. "Harris confronted Boots, and asked him if he said that," Cook explained. "Boots told the men to quit arguing, that it didn't matter who paid for what." Boots left the scene. "At that time, Harris said he was tired of arguing, and went to Tom Deshea's truck, pulled out a .12 gauge shotgun, and fired at Aldredge," the sheriff said. "The men were all standing close together, and Harris hit Taylor, killing him." Some of the shot hit Aldredge in the face. Following the first shot, Aldredge began running up the road, with Harris chasing him. "One other shot was fired," Cook said. "It hit Aldredge in the back." Following the incident, Harris turned himself into the Many Police Dept. He was arrested and charged with the first degree murder of Chip Taylor. At press time Wednesday, Harris was lodged in the Sabine Parish Jail. There is no bond for first degree murder, according to the sheriff. Aldredge was treated at a local hospital, before being transferred to Shreveport. He is recuperating at home at this time.
