All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Mrs. Hattie Mae Armstrong Tarbox Mrs. Hattie Mae Armstrong Tarbox, 98, of Pleasant Hill died Saturday, Dec. 13 at DeSoto Reginal Hospital in Mansfield after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist church with interment following at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Carl Munyon, pastor of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church officiated. Survivors include one nephew, Mr. Ralph Armstrong of San Antonio, Texas; two nieces, Mrs. Ione Davis Braswell of McLean, Va. and Mrs. Helen Armstrong Beatty of Lewisville, Ark. and a very special friend, Mr. Ray B. Bridges. Mrs. Tarbox was preceded in death by her her husband, Mr. Solon P. Tarbox; parents, Dr. R. L. Armstrong, Jr., and Mrs. Hattie O'pry Armstrong; one brother, Dr. Ralph Armstrong; one sister, Mrs. Pauline Davis and Mrs. Ione Evans and one niece, Mrs. Miriam Davis Hogan. Mrs. Tarbox is descended from the prominent Armstrong family, who were among the early settlers of the Old Pleasant Hill Community. She was born Oct. 23, 1899, to her parents, Dr. R. L. Armstrong, Jr. and Hattie O'pry Armstrong. Mrs. Tarbox received her early childhood schooling and secondary education at Pleasant Hill High. After graduating from Pleasant Hill High School, she attended Louisiana State Normal College (now Northwestern State University) in Natchitoches, receiving certification in primary education 1921. She begin her teaching career in Jennings , where she met Solon P. Tarbox. They were married on December 23,1922. Returning several years later to Sabine Parish, she and Mr. Tarbox took up residence in the old family home in Pleasant Hill. She entered the Sabine Parish School System about 1935 teaching second grade in Pleasant Hill and continued in this position for 29 years. Her retirement in 1964 culminated 33 years of dedicate service to the teaching profession. Mrs. Tarbox was a dedicated and devoted member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service for many years, holding various offices and being always willing to participate in programs and activities of the organization. Mrs. Tarbox was also selected in 1983 by the Pleasant Hill contingent of Delta Kappa Gamma, PSI Chapter, to be honored as an outstanding educator from Sabine Parish.
