Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. on June 28th, at the First Methodist Church in Many, followed by burial rites at the Many Cemetery. The Reverend George York of Vivian, Louisiana, assisted by the Reverend W. H. Bengston of Many, conducted the funeral services. Mrs. James E. Davis, Bill Leslie, and Marshall Petty rendered organ and vocal selections. Pallbearers were Judge William H. Ponder, Horace Tompkins, J. W. Lucius, Ralph Vines, O. E. Williams, and J. E. Carmichael. Van Vines was born on August 31, 1888, at the Lanana Bayou Community, located seven miles from Many. He attended Vines Elementary School, and graduated with the first senior class at the Many High School in 1912. for a brief period, he attended Louisiana State Normal College, before entering the grocery business with A. G. Dees. Later, he served his country in the U.S. Army in France, during World War I. For a number of years, he was in the service station business, before becoming an oil marketer. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, a charter member of the Floyd Jordan Post, American Legion, a past member of the Many Lions Club, and a member of the Louisiana Oil Marketeers Association. Van Vines was the son of William Richard Davidson Vines, and Catherine Maxey Vines. His father was the son of George Vines and Elizabeth "Betty" Speight. George Vines' father was John Vines, who migrated to Sabine Parish from South Carolina in the 1830's Elizabeth Speight's father was William Richard Davidson Speight, who donated one half the land for the original town of Many, and served as the first parish judge, when Sabine Parish was divided from Natchitoches Parish. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gussie Bridges Vines; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Vines Davis, and Mrs. Betty Vines Diesen; two grandchildren, Frederick Van Diesen, and Nannette Diesen; and one sister, Miss Emma Vines.
