All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** James Hayman Wheless James Hayman Wheless, 35 years old, of Logansport, drowned about 2:30 p.m., Monday, June 25, in a farm stock pond on the J. C. Forbus place in the Cedar Grove community near Many. According to witnesses, Wheless was wading with four children, whose ages ranged from 6 years to 13 years old, when he apparently waded into deep water, and couldn't swim. Cliff Varnado was nearby, and heard the children screaming. He rushed to the scene, but was too late to save Wheless. He recovered the body. The Sabine Parish Sheriff's Department was notified at 2:45 p.m., and Deputies Dub Jeter, and Travis Bennett went to the scene. The body was carried to Warren Meadows Funeral Home, and Dr. V. M. John, Sabine Parish Deputy Coroner, held the inquest. Wheless was a lifelong resident of Logansport, and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Services were held Wednesday, at 11 a.m., in Cool Springs Baptist Church, with Rev. Reuben Monk officiating, assisted by Rev. Jackie Meeks. Burial was in Cool Springs Cemetery, under the direction of Price-Caraway Funeral Home. Survivors include his mother, Mr. Lawrence Cordova; his stepfather, Lawrence Cordova of Logansport; three sisters, Mrs. Nan Ruth Gibbs of DeBerry, Tex., Mrs. Elizabeth Anne Anderson of Shreveport, and Mrs. Nattie Kay Bush of Many; three brothers, John Edward Wheless of Joaquin, Tex., Kenneth Wayne Wheless, and Walter Orie Wheless, both of Logansport; his grandfather, James Thomas of Logansport; two sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Louie Taylor of Deadwood, Tex., and Mrs. Mary Ann Mahalika of Mercerville, N. J.; two step brothers, Lawrence Edward Cordova of Logansport, and Billy Gene Cordova of Orange, Tex.; a number of aunts and uncles; and also a number of nieces and nephews.
