S. Hwy 171 near the KWLA radio station. Killed at the scene was a passenger in the pickup, Sam M. Richard, 61, of Many. Talbot Ward, 47, of Many, driver of the truck, died about 10 p.m., Sunday, at Fraser Hospital. According to Sgt. C. J. Miller, and Trooper Wingate Dowden, the investigating officers, Garthe Wright, 18, of Many, was traveling north on Hwy 171 at about 35 mph. Ward was driving the pickup south at about 50 mph. The officers said that Ward's pickup crossed the center line, hitting Wright's car about seven feet across the center line. The officers said that Ward was apparently intoxicated. Witnesses told officers that they saw Ward drive the truck across the center traffic line several times before the accident happened. Richard's brother told the officers that Sam and Ward had left to go to Zwolle to get some beer. Several cans of beer could be seen in the trunk, and as Richard's body was pulled out, they rolled to the ground. It should be pointed out that the Police Jury has an ordinance against beer and liquor being sold on Sunday, but apparently the ordinance isn't being enforced. Young Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Wright of Many, was taken by ambulance to Fraser Hospital. Mrs. Wright told the INDEX Tuesday afternoon, that Garthe is "doing real well", and that he is going to be alright.
