Reprinted by permission. Dedicated to the memory of Reuben Cooper and Raymond Riggs. GALILEE BAPTIST CHURCH was established lin 1884 by the Rev. C.C. "Coonie" Clayton for blacks in the Haynes Settlement and Springfield area. The first church, a log building, was located in what is now the Galilee Cemetery on the Springfield-Albany Road about a mile from the Springfield town limits. (1) The first grave was located in the cemetery over 80 years ago, although the oldest marked grave found so far is from the year 1918. A second church site was chosen, but when and why is not yet clear, and the old log building was left to deteriorate. The new site was in the Haynes Settlement, the present location, but a hurricane destroyed the second sanctuary in 1908. In recent years, a new church has been built at Haynes Settlement and the members have chosen to retain the original church name. Aubra Fontenot and Calvin C. Fayard.
