All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- William Mardis to Deed of Emancipation Nancy Know all men by these presents that I William Mardis of the city of Louisville in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have emancipated and set free and do emancipate and set free, my Negro girl named Nancy, about 7 years old, a bright Mulatto, well grown, slender made daughter of my dark brown negro woman named Eliza and I do hereby forever release the said Nancy from Slavery and all involuntary servi- tude to me and my heirs and do declare her to be free to all intents and purposes as if she had been born free. In witness thereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this seventh day of June, One thousand eight hundred and thirty. William Mardis (His Seal) Teste Worden Pope David T. Hardison State of Kentucky At a county court for Jefferson County at the courthouse in the city of Louisville on the eighth day of June, One thousand eight hundred and thirty. The above deed of Emancipation from William Mardis to Nancy, a bright mulatto girl about seven years of age, was produced in the said court and acknowledged by the said Mardis to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded and is recorded. The said Nancy being correctly described in the said deed and the said William Mardis together with William Pickett his security gave bond in the penalty of Three Hundred Dollars, payable to the commonwealth of Kentucky with a condition answered, the said Nancy shall not become chargeable to the county aforesaid or the public. In witness whereof I the Clerk of the said Court and keeper of the Seal thereof have hereto set my hand and the said Seal on the day and year aforesaid and in the thirty ninth year of the commonwealth.
