WORLD WAR I (1917 - 1918) Participants - 4,744,000 Deaths in service - 116,000 World War I known at the time as "the war to end all wars", drew quite heavily from St. Helena Parish. Some nev- er went overseas, while others served in France. This was the war that ended at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month in 1918. For many years November 11th was observed as Armistice Day in commemoration of the ending of World War I. It is now termed Veterans Day and honors all veterans of all wars.
