Grigg, a native of the State of NC and now a citizen of Louisiana, resident of Liberty Hill, in the Parish of Bienville, in said State of Louisiana, and who was a soldier,(sailor or marine as the case may be) from the State of NC in the Confederate States army ( or navy as the case may be) in the War between the United States and the Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under Act 123 of the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana of 1898; and I do solemnly swear that I served the Confederate States honorably from the day of my enlistment until the close of the war, (or until discharged or paroled as the case may be) as sworn by my answers below, and that I remained true to the Confederate cause until the surrender, and that I am now in indigent circumstances and unable to earn a livelihood by my own labor or skill, and that I am nor salaried or otherwise provided for by the State of Louisiana or by any other state or government, and am entitled to receive the benefits of said Act No. 123 of 1898 as further shown by my answers to the questions below, which I swear to be true and correct: 1. Frasson, Frank Grigg captain when captured. 4.Were you wounded? If so, in what battles, and if not, state under what circumstances during the was you received injury or injuries. Answer: From exposure and hard service I was sent to hospital at Petersburg in the summer of 1864. 5.What was the precise nature of your wound or wounds, if any ? Answer:no wounds 6.If you have lost a limb or an eye, state when, where, and how. Answer: None 7.Were you discharged from the army by reason of wound, wounds, or from effects of service? Answer: discharged after surrender being a Prisoner at Point Lookout. 8. If discharged or paroled from the army, where were you, and what did you do until the close of the war? Answer: discharged at Point Lookout as a Rebel Prisoner in the month of June 1865. 9. What was the name of the surgeon who attended you when discharged? Answer: Major Brady was in command of the prison. 10.Where were you at the surrender? Answer: wife about forty five, children 9, 7,6,4, 18.How many children have you, and how many of each sex? Answer:I am the father of 3 boys and one girl 19Are you engaged in any business? Answer:I live on a farm with my family and do farm work when I am able to do anything in the way of labor. 20.have you any estate in your own right,real or personal, and what is its value ? County of Cleveland I, Levy Grigg of the above state and county do hereby certify that J.W.Grigg was a fellow Confederate soldier with me ,in the Confederate army and was captured with me at Petersburg in the month of March,the 25th day in the year of 1865 and was a prisoner with me at Point lookout when discharged from prison in the month of June 1865 and that the said J.W.Grigg, remained true to the Confederate cause until discharged as a rebel Prisoner as above stated. Dec. 6th 1899 E.F. Brian,Secretaty of Board of Pensions Batton Rouge Louisiana Dear Sir-in reguard to the application of J.W.Grigg, from Liberty Hill,Bienville,Parish,La. Mr. Grigg has received notice that his application, has been rejected.he received a letter from you in Sept. dated Sept.14th 1899. That his application would be considered.(??) you stated {provided}he gave name and number of regiment & state. We have shown that when the Board examined the application they would find Fifty six 56 regiment Commanded by R.F. Frasson Enlisting from the state of North Carolina, the county and place of enlisting & the company. Also having been given Therefore is an oversight some where in regard to that if that is the cause of rejection. My work for Mr. Grigg is free of charge he being a poor man, & a good neighbor. I would be glad to know &upon grounds the application was rejected, Yours, P.S.Roden. J.P. Page nine (9) This is also a handwritten letter 2859 State of Louisiana Parish of Bienville Personaly came and appeared before me the undersigned authority.J.W.Grigg applicant of liberty Hill,Bienville Parish,La. Who having been notified that his application was rejected for the reason that the names of the state,enlisting from,and the number of the regiment was not given. Who deposes and says that he enlisted from the State of North Carolina.The number of regiment being fifty six {56} and hereby authorizes and empowers the Secretary of board of Pensions to annex this affidavit to the application and insert in the proper place the information. Gave no reason for the rejection of this applicants claim,please see letter on page 259 Book Nov 99 to 1900' (A personal note, as I sit here and transcribe these documents, it is important that I point out that the handwriting on the first application document is the same all the way through, no information was later added as this letter implies. The information is in J.W.'Grigg's handwritting on the origional document .He did indeed furnish all the requested information the first time.Somebody is doing some fancy dancing ?
