Sherrouse, a native of Louisiana, and now a citizen of Louisiana, resident at New Orleans, in the Parish of Orleans in said State of Louisiana, and who was a soldier, (sailor or marine as the case may be) from the State of Louisiana in the Confederate States army (or navy as the case may be) in the war between the United States and the Confederate States, do hereby apply for aid under Act 125 of the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana of 1898; and I do solemnly swear that I served the Confederate States honorably from the day of my enlistment until the close of the civil war, (or until discharged or paroled as the case may be,) as shown by my answers below, and that I remained true to the Confederate cause until the surrender, and that I am now in indigent circumstances, and unable to earn a livelihood by my own labor or skill, and that I am not salaried or otherwise provided for by the State of Louisiana or by any other State or government, and am entitled to receive the benefits of said Act NO. 125 of 1898, as further shown by my answers to the questions below, which I swear to be true and correct: 1. DEAR SIR: This board, in the discharge of its duties under Article 303 of the Constitution of 1898 of the State of Louisiana, and of Act No. 125 of its General Assembly of the same year, creating a Board of Pension Commissioners, respectfully apply for information from your records, relative to C. M. Sherrouse of Company C 4th Batt La Infantry. He claims that he enlisted in March 1863 at Savannah Ga, and that he was at home on furlough. Please give the record of this solider. WAR DEPARTMENT, THE ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, WASHINGTON August 23, 1911. Respectfully returned to the President, Louisiana Board of Pension Commissioners, Baton Rouge. The records show that C. M. Sherrouse, private, Company C, 4th Battalion Louisiana Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted March 18, 1863, and was paroled at Natchitoches, Louisiana, June 6, 1865. [signed] H. Ainsworth The Adjutant General. =============================================== State of Louisiana Parish of Franklin. Before me, the undersigned authority, personally appeared J.J. Lea, who is now Clerk of Court of Franklin Parish, Louisiana, and in which capacity he has served since 1888 and who, being by me duly sworn says that he enlisted in the Confederate Army and left Monroe La in Company F Fourth Louisiana Battalion on or about the 2nd day of March 1862 wen to Savannah, Ga, and left there about the 1st of June 1862 went with said Fourth Louisiana Battalion, commanded by Col. Jno. McHenry to James Island` SC remained there about one month, then went back to Savannah, remained there till Nov. of same year then went to Wilmington, NC remained there till a about Jany. 1903 went back to Savannah, Ga. That said 4th Louisiana Battalion was put in Walker's Brigade and left Savannah, went to Jackson, Miss where said Brigade formed a part of Johnston command in rear of Vicksburg while that place is invested by Grant's Army, after the fall of Vicksburg this 4th La Battalion was sent to reinforce Bragg's army which was hen in North Georgia and placed in Adams' Louisiana Brigade where it remained till after the battle of Chichamauga, then Gen. Randall L. Gibson was placed in command of this La Brigade which consisted of the Sixteenth and Twenty-fifth Louisiana Regiments Fourth Louisiana Battalion and Austin's Battalion of Sharpshooters, that latter being from New Orleans, and I think was called 14th La Battalion. That this Brigade was in all of the Georgia Campaign under Joe. E. Johnston and Hood. Then with Hood in his movement to Nashville and Franklin, Tennessee. Was at Mobile, Ala.at the close of the war. Affiant further states that while his command was a Mobile he obtained a 60-days furlow about the 20th of Mar. 1865 and left there in company with Major Austin, Capt. Clayton and several others who had obtained furlows. That C. M. Shearouse enlisted in Company C of 4th La Battalion while said Battalion was at Savannah Ga, in March 1863. That he served honorably, was a good an loyal soldier in said Command from the time of his enlistment down to near the close of the war when he left the Command on Account of severe and protracted illness. That from my knowledge and acquaintance with him since the close ode the war he has been an honorable, quiet and peaceable and Christian gentlemen and it afford me pleasure to make these statements for his benefit. John McHenry. That C.M. Sherrouse enlisted in his said Company about March 1863 and served honorable and faithfully up to the time that he left the Company on account of his protracted illness. That he has seen him frequently since the close of the war. That he bears the name of a good honorable citizen.
