Stafford's "Stafford Guards" in the Stafford Guards, 9th La. Infantry,Co. B. I wonder if you will be willing to publish the first muster roll of the "Stafford Guards" as recorded in General Leroy Augustus Stafford written by G.M.G. Stafford, The Stafford Book, 1744 White Street, Alexandria, La., 1943, pp. 34-35. Although Leroy Augustus Stafford was opposed to secession, as was Dr. Smith Gordon, the two of them organized the "Stafford Guards." The Stafford Guards were readied for action and accepted by the Governor of La, Thomas Moore. On June 4, 1861 they boarded a steamer in Alexandria, La. for New Orleans. According to G.M.G. Stafford, very few of the Stafford Guards ever saw Alexandria again. They were joined by other men from Rapides Parish while in training. One of these was Joseph Gordon, brother of Dr. Smith Gordon and Sergeant Archie Gordon. Both Joseph and Archie Gordon gave their lives for the Confederacy, as did General Leroy Augustus Stafford, one of the bravest of our war heroes. I do not know if this book is still available for sale, but it is to be found in some genealogical libraries. The roster is as follows: OFFICERS Captain--L.A. Stafford First Lieutenant- Dr. Smith Gordon Second Lieutenant-C.D. Waters NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS First Sergeant--J.D. Workman Second Sergeant-A.C. Bringhurst Third Sergeant--N.C.
