In St. John on Monday last, Willis Pugh and Jesse Conway, both
colored, and accused of assaulting with a dangerous weapon, with
intent to murder, were tried by Judge Hahn, found guilty, and
sentenced one to two years in the penitentiary and the other to
eighteen months. This will serve as a good lesson to those flourishing
pistols.


Moses Ely, colored, who has probably committed more crimes in the
way of shooting, arson and rape, then any man in Louisiana, and
who was lately sentenced by Judge Hahn, in Jefferson parish, to
fourteen years in the penitentiary, has made his escape. While
being conveyed with other convicts on a car along the coast near
Bonnet Carre, St. John parish, La., just after dark, he jumped
off, and after being fired at by several guards, disappeared among
the tall weeds, and could not afterwards be found. It is uncertain
whether he was wounded or not. This is the second time he has
escaped from the penitentiary. On the former occasion he was
recaptured, and the authorities are now again on the lookout for
him. He was a terror to the good colored people of Jefferson and
St. Charles.
