She was the fourth of six children born to the union of the late Ruffin Maybuce and Idella Pipes Maybuce. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings. She was baptized at an early age at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. She graduated from Southern University with a bachelor of arts degree in music, from Northwestern University with a bachelor of arts degree in education and LSU with a master of arts degree in education. She began teaching in the Iberville Parish school system in 1946. She was an English teacher, but her most notable contribution was as a beloved music teacher. She was united in marriage to Alexander Carter Jr. Born to this union were two sons, Alexander Carter III and Andre Keith Carter. She enjoyed her beloved grandchildren born to her sons. She operated Carters Mortuary after retiring from the Iberville Parish school system. She was an active religious, community and civic leader. She joined St. Peters Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. D.B. Reed Sr., and served faithfully. She was the churchs musician for many years and continued to serve in various capacities within her church under the leadership of her former student, the Rev. Van Smith Jr. She served as a musician for the childrens choir and was an active member of the Deaconess Board. She leaves to cherish her memory her two loving sons, their beloved children, and a wealth of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other family members and many friends. Visiting at St. Peter Baptist Church, Plaquemine, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Tau Alpha Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will lead an Ivy Beyond the Wall ceremony at the church at 10 a.m. Monday. Religious services at the church at 11 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Van Smith Jr. Interment in Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church Cemetery. She was past president of Iberville Parish Retired Teachers Association and a three-term secretary and treasurer and 50-year member of Womens Elite Club Inc. She was a member of Temple Chapter No. 58 of Order of the Eastern Star, the first president of Retired Teachers Association, Plaquemine chapter and a two-term president of District II Retired Teachers Association. She served two terms as state second vice president during the turbulent years of African Americans seeking their rightful places in state organizations. She was the first public relations officer of the Retired Teachers Association on the state level, a job that is now highly paid but in which she served without pay. She served for more than 15 years as chairwoman of the Westside Vocational School board of directors. She was the first African American to be voted an Outstanding Community Business Partner by the Plaquemine Chamber of Commerce, based on the qualities that the Chamber discusses as an organization. She was a deaconess of her church and was trainer of the children choir. She served on various church committees, including five-time chairwoman of the church anniversary. She did not accept an office when her chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was organized because of other commitments, but she worked and served wherever needed in the spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
