Sehorn, Marshall Estus SEHORN Marshall Estus Sehorn, a native of Concord, NC and resident of metropolitan New Orleans, LA since 1965, passed away December 5, 2006 from complications of a lifelong respiratory condition. He was 72. Sehorn graduated from Winecoff High School, Class of 1953. While attending NC State University, he began playing in and booking bands. In 1958, he began working for New York's Fire and Fury labels as a promotion man and talent scout throughout the South. On one of his first trips back home, he discovered Wilbert Harrison singing "Kansas City" at a local club in Charlotte. Sehorn recorded Harrison in New York at the tail end of a gospel session for the Fury label. During 1959, "Kansas City" remained a Number One hit for seven weeks on the R'N B charts."He had a nose for talent," said New Orleans' Cosimo Matassa, the dean of rock'n roll recording engineers, who first committed to 78s, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Shirley & Lee, Professor Longhair, and scores more. Matassa also cited Sehorn's ability to put an artist at ease. A wad of chaw packed in his cheek, wearing a mechanic's drab jumpsuit, Sehorn never gave the impression that he was anything but just plain folk. His friendship with Paul McCartney (who recorded his "Venus and Mars" album with Sehorn in New Orleans) lasted well beyond their first meeting in 1974 and into the new millennium where tickets were always waiting for Sehorn and company wherever McCartney played. In 1960, during a promotional swing through New Orleans, Sehorn heard a record that would change the course of his life; the life of a brilliant, young songwriter/pianist; and a diminutive ex-boxer turned singer. "Lottie Mo" was credited to a local artist unknown to Sehorn at the time Lee Dorsey. But the vocal and piano style reminded Sehorn of Ray Charles. More importantly, he learned, the pianist was twenty-two-year-old Allen Toussaint. As a manager, Sehorn was the ideal match for Toussaint. His big daddy southern lubricity was the perfect foil for the shy Toussaint who considered the business side of music to be on a much lower "spiritual" plane. Sehorn protected Toussaint; made all the deals; and ran interference for his partner so that Toussaint had creative freedom. While still with the Fire and Fury labels, he was connected with the seminal hits for those labels, including Gladys Knight and the Pips' chart debut, "Every Beat of My Heart," Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae," and Lee Dorsey's "Ya Ya". With the latter record, Sehorn inaugurated a long, successful relationship with the artist, Lee Dorsey, and the songwriter/producer behind the artist, Allen Toussaint. In 1965, Sehorn and Toussaint formed a partnership and Sehorn relocated to New Orleans. While Toussaint handled the creative chores, Sehorn closed the deals which provided worldwide distribution for their productions "Working in a Coalmine" by Lee Dorsey, just one of the international successes of this period. Ever the entrepreneur, Sehorn's dream was to build his own recording studio in New Orleans. He fulfilled this dream in 1973, when he and Toussaint opened SeaSaint Recording Studio in the Gentilly section of the city. Their studio was barely open a year when Toussaint arranged and recorded SeaSaint's first hit, "Lady Marmalade" by Patti LaBelle, covered recently in the film, "Moulin Rouge". While SeaSaint Recording Studio may not have become an assembly line churning out hit records, it served, for a crucial period of time, in keeping New Orleans music alive. Had Sehorn, or SeaSaint never existed, it's doubtful the world would have ever heard the Neville Brothers; seen Professor Longhair in "Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together", Stevenson Palfi's essential documentary about New Orleans Music, much of it shot at SeaSaint; or enjoyed the music of artists like Dr. John, the Meters, Allen Toussaint, and the Wild Tchoupitoulas. In this keeping open the doors of SeaSaint Studio as long as he did, Sehorn has left a rich legacy of American music. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Darcy of New Orleans; a brother, Charlie H. Sehorn of Concord; and 12 nieces and nephews. (Special thanks to Jonathan Singer for writing this obituary).
