St. Charles Herald Excerpts - 4 Aug 1883 St. Charles Parish, LA Submitted for the LA GenWeb Archives by: Linda G. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** We were favored by a call from Judge John H. Ilsley, of Ascension parish, yesterday morning. On Monday next, our friends, Frederick Toups and Sosthene Bourgeois, will begin rice cutting in this parish. We received several days ago from Ursin Rousscan, a fine sample stalk of sugar cane, raised on his place below Hahnville. It was, at the time, the best we had received. Telephone communication between Baton Rouge and New Orleans will soon be established. The work of setting up the posts is being pushed with vigor through this parish. We learn with regret that Mr. Telesphore Baudouin, father of our parish Assessor and Superintendent of public schools, T. T. Baudouin, Esq., is lying seriously ill at his residence above Hahnville. Judge Michael Hahn who for the last ten days, has been confined to his bed by severe illness, has recuperated enough to enable him to take a trip to the City on Wednesday morning. He will open Court here on Monday next. Dr. Stein's horse patient, "Old Grey" is dead, and the doctor refuses to be comforted. So many days and nights of toil and homeopathic attendance were certainly deserving of a better ending. They have our sympathy. Mrs. Urban, a sister of Judge Hahn, her two daughters, Mrs. Maes and Miss Maggie, with her son Albert and grandson Urban, returned to New Orleans last Wednesday, after a short, but we trust, pleasant visit to our village. We are again called upon to announce another death in Hahnville. The infant child of our fellow townsman, L. Bernard, Esq., died on Sunday last after a long and painful illness. Our sympathies are extended to the afflicted parents. Jules D'Arensbourg, Pierre Warfield and James Warfield were arrested Thursday evening on a charge of obtaining goods and money to the amount of $120.90 from Anthony Madere. The parties were not incarcerated but gave bond for their appearance. Victor Baptiste, an old and respected colored citizen of Flaggville, better known as "Pichon" died on Thursday evening, at 9 30 o'clock, aged about sixty-five years. He was sunstruck in the field during the day and from the time he fell, uttered not a word. He died beloved and respected by all who knew him. His funeral took place on Thursday evening under the auspices of the "Dieu ?ous protege" association of which the deceased was an honored founder. We have received from Owen McLeran, Esq., civil engineer and surveyor, a map of the Marmillion plantation, containing 2300 acres, located on the Mississippi River, in the parish of St. John the Baptist. It is a good piece of work and reflects great credit on its compiler, our worthy townsman. Mr. Theo. Brou, on Thursday morning last, inst, sent to this office a sample of ribbon sugar cane raised on his place above Hahnville. It is still better than any we have received so far, and is justly entitled to wear the blue ribbon. Next! In the District Court, the following cases are fixed for trial next week.
