Mr. William A. Greene, the energetic lightening rod agent of J. M. Robinson's 246 Canal street, N.O., and also solicitor for H?. F. Bridewell & Co., 169 Gravier street, N.O., the manufacturers agent for their fire and burgler proof safes, favored Hahnville with a visit in the early part of this week securing orders for his principals. The fascine work in front of Mr. Leon Sarpy's, opposite Hahnville, is falling in, owing to the low condition of the Mississippi river. The Board of State Engineers have been on a tour of inspection of levees, but we have yet to learn of their having visited our parish. Gentlemen, this and other levees in our vicinity need attention at this time. On Tuesday last, while in the city, Manager Huck, of the Telephone Co. informed us that he would, if possible, have a switch board located in Hahnville next week, at the HERALD Office, in order to enable our merchants and the community to speak with friends above and below us. The charge will be for five minutes or less between here and New Orleans, twenty-five cents. Mr. Will J. Kelly, formerly of this parish, shot a colored man named Sam Langston, on Tuesday, 11th inst. Langston died in a few hours. The shooting occured in Ascension parish and was the result of a row caused by Langston's refusal to work. Mr. Kelly passed St. Charles station on the Texas & Pacific Railroad last Thursday evening. It is supposed he was on his way to give himself up. We have since learned that he was released on $2000 bond. A colored boy named Sylvester Barthelmy, was shot and seriously wounded last Sunday evening, by Buddy Green, who is now in custody. Then shooting was, as usual, the result of a gambling spree; the accused remarked that he was going to shoot some ni**er before night, when the wounded boy replied, well, you will not shoot me, and started to walk off, whereupon Green did shoot him, it is said without a cause or provocation.
