Old-fashioned hairdos frame unlined faces and though just a hint of clothing is shown, it is enough to set the mood. "Everybody wore those." "I can't believe anyone would wear that." And, "Hey, is that a Neru jacket?" bring gales of laughter and a tug of nostalgia. Also brought to mind are the people we grew up with. "Cecile has grandchildren now." "Mario died last year." "And whatever happened to Joe?" Kay McKey, assistant director of the St. John the Baptist Parish Library, said many people often visit the library looking for high school yearbooks. "Many people come in thinking that the schools donate yearbooks to libraries, but they don't," McKey said. "We have some, but would like to have a complete collection of yearbooks from St. John Parish high schools." Julie Cancienne, public service librarian for the St. Charles Parish Library, said they receive many requests each year for the annuals. "They would be a good addition to our Louisiana room where we have all our local history and reference materials," she said. A good source of nostalgia and entertainment, the annuals also would help organizers of class reunions. "Sometimes people come looking for them when they are planning reunions," McKey said. "I would love to get hold of the old Fifth Ward yearbooks. They have particularly active alumni," she said. Both librarians said they are interested in yearbooks only from their respective parishes.
