Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/stcharles/photos/obits/2010 and click on the name of interest. ========== Ralph Dewey St. Ament, age 81 passed away at 3:50 am on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 in Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson, La. He was born in New Orleans, raised in Destrehan and lived in Norco for the past 60 years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice Friloux St. Ament; two sons, Douglas St. Ament of Austin, Texas and Mark St. Ament of Norco; one daughter, Gwen St. Ament Cashio of Destrehan; two daughters-in-law; Karla "Susie" Granier St. Ament and Sarah Hamlin; one son-in-law, Jeffrey Cashio; two grandchildren, Justin St. Ament and Erika Cashio; two brothers-in-law, James Friloux (Ethelyn "Bank") of Baton Rouge and Stephen Friloux (Donna) of Mobile, Alabama; one sister-in-law, Suzanne Friloux of New Sarpy. He graduated from elementary at Destrehan High School; St. Stanislaus High School, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; attended Spring Hill College, Mobile, Alabama; and graduated from L.S.U. College of Chemistry and Physics. He spent two years in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, being discharged as a First Lieutenant. He worked as a Chemist at Shell Oil Company's Norco Refinery for over 35 years. While at Shell, he also taught Chemistry at St. Charles Borromeo High School in Destrehan, one hour a day, for five years. After retiring from Shell, he worked at the Ray Gomez franchise of H & R Block as a tax preparer for six years. He was active in community affairs. He was a Third Degree Emblem Knight of Columbus and a Fourth Degree. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 27, 2010 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Destrehan and will continue on Saturday, August 28, 2010 from 8:00 am until 9:45 am at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Destrehan with Fr. Harry Bugler officiant. Military Honors will follow in the St. Charles Mausoleum. Ralph had three "loves" after his family. His church, in which he was instrumental in the establishment of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Norco, and served on many ministries there. At the time of his death, he was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, where he was a member of the Men of Manresa. The Knights of Columbus where he was a member of the Red Church Council No. 3634 for 56 years; and of Archbishop Blenk Assembly No. 318, Fourth Degree for 12 years. He served his Council as an Officer, Director and/or Chairman since 1955 as Financial Secretary from 1972 through 2008. He was an officer in the Louisiana State Association of Financial Secretaries for seventeen years, including President for two years. As such, he attended the Knights of Columbus Supreme (international) Convention in Washington, D.C. in 1984. He enjoyed the pageants and festivals where he worked with the St. Charles Parish (Sugar Cane) Festival since 1960. He was Chairman for twenty-five years, and Director for five years. At death, he was "Director Emeritus." During his tenure, the Festival went from a small, local pageant to the "top Parish in the State." He initiated a luncheon open to the public, a Coronation Ball, and entries into seven State Festivals for the Queen and Princesses. He was a charter member of the Louisiana Pageant Judges Association, and judged in many local, area, State and national pageants. Through the years, he was honored as the Dedicatee of the Louisiana Cattle Festival; Honoree of the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival; King of the Louisiana Cotton Festival; and King of the Louisiana Cattle Festival. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals (LAFF) in 2002. Arrangements under the direction of H.C.
