MERRITT

Warren Franklin Merritt Jr., affectionately known as Skeeter by friends and 
family, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the age of 84.

Merritt was a native of Galveston and a resident of Llano, Texas since 1993. He 
was born December 31, 1927 to Warren Franklin Merritt Sr. and Mildred (Hay) 
Merritt in Temple, Texas. 

Skeeter was a graduate of Ball High School in Galveston, an Army veteran and a 
graduate of the University of Texas in Austin. In 1955, he became employed with 
Union Carbide, retiring in 1991 after 36 years. His job with Carbide gave him 
the opportunity to live and make many friends in Texas, Louisiana, and West 
Virginia. However, his happiest years were spent during his retirement at his 
home on the Llano River, a place where he declared he would spend the rest of 
his life. Since moving to Llano in 1993, he has been a member of Grace 
Episcopal Church, where he was involved in the Cursillo Movement, Kairos Prison 
Ministry, and numerous other church related activities.

He was past chairman of Llano New Horizons, a member of the Llano Noon Lions 
Club, and a Meals on Wheels volunteer, to name just a few of his many 
activities and achievements. He was most recently an enthusiastic supporter and 
participant in Caregiver’s Day Out in Llano. 
Skeeter was an avid football fan, a supporter of Llano High School Yellow 
Jackets, University of Texas Longhorns and the Green Bay Packers.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Frances Hische Merritt of 
Llano, Texas; one daughter, Lynn Merritt Gaudet and husband Steve Gaudet of St. 
Francisville; three sons, David Warren Merritt and wife Elaine Jackson of 
Amargosa Valley, Nevada, Michael Sidney (Mickey) Merritt of Houston, Texas and 
Edward Kelly Merritt of South Charleston, West Virginia; one sister, Lois 
Merritt Odell and husband Jack of Stephenville, Texas; 13 grandchildren, 12 
great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Norman Merritt, and by his parents 
Reverend Warren Franklin Merritt, Sr. and Mildred Hay Merritt.

A memorial service was held at Waldrope Hatfield Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel 
on Saturday, May 5, 2012, and a reception followed at Grace Episcopal Church in 
Llano, Texas. 

A private burial followed.

Funeral Homes, Inc. Llano, Texas.
