Rev. George Julius Fischer Jr., 82, resident of Luling, and a retired Presbyterian minister, passed away peacefully on July 27. after a valiant battle with a long illness.

Fischer was born to the late George Julius Fischer Sr. and Mae Theresa Saillard in New Orleans on Nov. 29, 1933.

He was a graduate of New Orleans Academy and completed his undergraduate studies at Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College), where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.

He later earned his Master of Divinity degree from Austin Theological Seminary. He was a dedicated minister of the Presbyterian Church in Louisiana for much of his career, including five years as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Oakdale, 16 years as pastor of Kenner Presbyterian Church and 10 years as pastor of First Union Presbyterian Church in Luling where he retired from the ministry in 2002.  He was also a devoted servant to his community and served in executive positions at the Kenner YMCA, Colonial Oaks Living  Center and the Sophie Gumbel Guild.

He was a gentleman in the truest sense, a good man who made service to others  and the love of his family the cornerstones of his life.

Fischer was a faithful member of the Rotary Club of St. Charles Parish, the Community Chorus of River Parishes and St. Charles Social Concerns. He was a past president of Kenner Rotary Club and a former board member of the Presbyterian Services for the Elderly and the Westminster Foundation.

He is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Louise Broach Fischer; his daughters Elizabeth “Betsy” Fischer Martin (Jonathan) and Julie Fischer McCarter  (Aaron), and his granddaughter Ella Elizabeth Fischer Raineri. He will be deeply missed by his friends and loved ones, who celebrate that he is now at peace with his creator.
