She was one of 11 born to the late Alfred and Emily Dorsey Hills. At the age of 14, she quit school and moved to New Orleans, where she lived with an older sister. Three years later, she began employment for the prominent Coleman family of New Orleans. The Colemans loved her and on occasion provided a paid vacation to Los Angeles, Calif. In 1951, at the age of 24, she traveled to Los Angeles and then decided to permanently relocate to California. Hills accepted Christ as her savior when she was a child and she deeply loved the Lord and continued to grow in her faith. In 1964, she united with the Mount Moriah Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Dr. Earl A. Pleasant. She remained faithful under the pastoral leadership of Dr. Melvin V. Wade, Sr. Over the years, Hilda served in the Sunday Church School, the Mission ministry and the PastorÕs Aide Society. Hilda consistently attended the Wednesday noon day prayer band and the annual Vacation Bible School. She regularly attended worship services and supported the ministry with her time, talent and resources until her health declined. She had the gift of prayer and she was a Òprayer warrior.Ó Hilda trusted God and fully believed in the adhering to the diligent instruction she received as a child from her late mother. She also possessed the gift of giving; and whether out of resources or given as a sacrifice; on countless occasions she abundantly provided funds, food, her time and useful items to those in need. For many years she performed domestic services for several prominent and nationally known Los Angeles area families. Due to her exceptional work ethic and unquestionable character; even long after she had retired from their employment, these families maintained a close relationship with her. To enhance her life and profession, she completed food preparation and cooking classes. HildaÕs character and reputation were impeccable, as she enjoyed the utmost respect and admiration in her community. Even the criminal element respected her. About 25 years ago, her apartment was burglarized and her television stolen. Within two days the then-spray painted television was returned. It was later reported by a certain individual that Òno one is to mess with Ms. Hills.Ó She suffered some illnesses while in the prime of her life; however, she unrelentingly devoted herself to the upbringing of her cherished sons, Allan Steward and Robert Murray. She was preceded in death by brother Alfred Hills III, sisters Leanna Hills-Clement and Leola Hydell. She is survived by brothers, Milton Hills of Destrehan, Pelton and Herschel Hills of Paradis, Steve Hills of Boutte and Edward Hills of Avondale. Also surviving are sisters Thelma Vidal of Ama and Victoria Hills of Paradis and her daughter-in-law Gwen Steward of Lakewood, California. She has four grandchildren; Akili Steward (Lisa) and Aoydele Steward of Pasadena, California, Maxwell Steward of Alhambra, California and Joseph Steward of Lakewood, California. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Hilda will be sorely missed. ===================
