Most of Genesis beginning with (torn) page 38 is here. The Bible is missing the last books ending with the intact page 186 Chap. IX Hebrews. This Bible has an intact page separating the Old and New Testaments. Following is exactly what can be clearly read on these pages including punctuation. The NEW TESTAMENT of our LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST: Translated out of The Original Greek: Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised Stereotype Edition. New York: Stereotyped by E. and J. White, For "The American Bible Society." 1829. For the reader: Being a student of the English Language, I was interested in what stereotype may have meant in those days. I found this definition of stereotype plates: "printing plates cast in type metal from a matrix or mold made from prepared soft paper, plaster of Paris, or other molding material." I had no prior knowledge of this Bible. It was in the old family home at Pine Grove, St. Helena Parish, LA which Grandpa Raz built when my Father, George N. McLin, was very young. The house, sadly, burned in 2002. My Dad, George N. McLin was born in 1892. He could remember being sent to get nails when they were building the house. He noted that the nails were round; prior to that time nails had been square. The person recording these dates did not identify him self but I believe the person who recorded this was William H. Maclin son of John and Mary. My reasoning is that in the recording certain clearly identifiable clues such as the way the number 8 is written can be discerned. This is something much more a feeling but my sense is that in recording of the births a steady hand can be detected but the recording of the deaths is shaky. At any rate whoever wrote this, wanted to record his story and it is our History. The Family Record in the middle of the Bible is intact consisting of 8 pages. Three and one-half pages of this record is fairly uniform indicating this record must have been made by one person at more or less the same time. Reader, please note that writing utensils were very primitive in those days. Paper and ink was not readily available. I have noted where the ink appears different. I have spelled the names etc. as I have read them. If William is written out I record as written, however often, the abbreviation Wm is used. Maclin, McLin and Mclin are typed as nearly as it can be discerned from writing which is surely over 150 years old. John and Mary Maclin's Family Record Pg. 1 was born (written at each birth) Wm. H. Mclin 28 March 1800 John H. Mclin 9 November 1801 Lucinda L. McLin 7 January 1804 Robert Maclin 22 January 1806 I T A Maclin 9 March 1808 Marget E. Mclin 2 May 1810 Henry H. Mclin 29 September 1812 and departed this life 17 February 1814 pg. 2 James B. Maclin 29 September 1814 Mary Ann Maclin 6 December 1816 and departed this life 13 September 1824 John T. McLin (different ink) departed this life 5 February 1823 Mary McLin December 1852 (The next entries appear to be recorded deaths, hardly legible therefore not a certainty) I have assumed this is the family of John and Mary who were Williamıs parents. Tennessee records indicate John and Mary lived in Tennessee and Maryıs last name prior to marriage was Havenridge. Departed this life on the 12 November 1875, at 20 Minutes after 8 O'clock P.M., Wm. H. McLin (appears to be back to the original ink) Departed this life 9th day of September 1877 at 11 O'clock P.M. Sarah McLin (These two entries were the first giving time.)(The next two entries are recorded births.) William H. Maclin 28 March 1800 Sarah Richason (sp) 15 December 1806 Wm. H. McLin and Sarah Richason were married the 29th day of January 1824 John R Mclin was born 3 February 1825 Departed this life february (note small letter) 27 february 1825? Wm. H. McLin Junier (Jr.) 2 July 1827 Maryann Mclin Junier 28 October 1829 Thomas Mclin 27 April 1832 Maryann Maclin departed this life the first day of September 1833 aged 3 years 10 months..(not legible) pg 4 James Mclin 22 October 1834 Ruffin Maclin 26 July 1838 Sarahann Maclin 2 April 1840 On this page we find different ink but appears to be written in the same hand. The entries: Robert Maclin 26 July 1842 and departed this life August the 13th 1843 Hiram McLin 14 June 1844 Erasmus Maclin 27 July 1846 Lourinda Maclin 2 July 1848 Martin Maclin 29 October 1850 pg. 5 Wm. H. McLin Jr was born July the 2 1827 and departed this life March the 29 1867 (The above entry appears to be made in the same handwriting as the original entries.) Following this we have: Thomas McLin was born April the 27th 1832 and Departed this life May 5th 1870 Martin McLin departed this life May 15th 1886 (..A line is drawn in the original ink under these entries, and then we have in ink appearing as the original entries:) Lurinda Wunch departed this life September the 28-1888 (This entry is made again in blue ink and although the script is similar I believe a different person made this entry) James McLin departed this life September 12th 1911 pg. 6 (This page is very difficult to read and is not organized in the manner of the other entries. The writing that can be read is clear, just extremely faded. I think it is written in a woman's hand. The writing to my eye is different than previous writing. We have assumed the June 10, 1893 date was the date of the recording. As the older McLin's would say, and we have assumed, this is "another Bunch".) Baton Rouge, La June 10, 1893 Henry and Bell McLin's Family -------- Sarah H. McLin was born February 2nd 1855 -------- Chloe McLin was born December 15th 1856 and died June 10 1862 at the age of five and a half. Frank E. McLin was born September 10th 1858 Mary E. McLin was born August 31, 1861 Sarah McLin was born January 10th 1864 died February 1st 1865 she was one year and 3 weeks (written to the side) Katherine McLin was born September 5th 1866 died July 6, 1867 age 10 months Records in the National Archives indicate Henry served in the Union cause in the War Between the States. It appears to me that after Henryıs death some one in the family wanted to record the death and birth dates of his children. I have furnished this Bible record to many people and have been contacted by the many descendants of the siblings of my Grandfather Erasmus but have never been able to tie this record to any of William Henryıs children of this generation. I would be thrilled beyond measure to be contacted by the descendants of the children of Henry and Bell. The family had a history of giving the same name to children in each generation. pg. 7 Again we have different writing which I am recording just as written: Sarah A McLin was bornd April the 2 1840 (sp) George R McLin was bornd March the 9 1867 (sp) Sarah E Stwart was born July the 13th 1872 (sp) in middle of page this entry in different script: Erasmus E. Wunsch was born July 21.th 1876 in the Parish of Livingston a line is drawn under this entry then appears to be signed by Katie McLin in fancy script and then marked through but not so that it can not be clearly read. pg. 8 (the last) (in pencil.. Was Aunt Liza learning to write?) Miss Eliza Mclin (c underlined ") Pine Grove La two pages over on back of page to New Testament in pencil, written, in fancy script: Eliza A. Mclin was Borned June the 26 1883 (in ink fancy script) Erasmus Edward Wunsch was born July 21th 1876 in the Parish of Livingston Louisiana Walter Henry Wunsch was born April 3rd 1879 in the City of Baton Rouge La (in pencil) Otto, Oscar Wunsch Jr was born February 7th 1881 in the Parish of East Baton Rouge La Robert George Wunsch was born April 21th 1883 in the parish of East Baton Rouge, La Lula Antonette Wunsch was born 30th of January 1886 in the Parish (crossed out) City of Baton Rouge La (I think it is obvious that a Maclin (McLin) daughter married a Wunsch and had possession of this Bible for some years. As a child I had no knowledge of a family Bible but the Bible of my Aunt Effie was much in evidence when I stayed with her as a child. She read her Bible every night by the light of a kerosene lamp. My cousin Abilene Nora Starns Davis delivered this Maclin (McLin) Family Bible to me. Abilene has Aunt Effie's Bible. I thought it interesting to know something of the American Bible Society since this Bible was printed for the Society. These dates and information are recorded from a folder sent to me by the American Bible Society in celebration of its 180TH year. 1816 The American Bible Society (ABS) is organized as the nation's first national Bible Society and receives congratulatory letter from the Bible Society in Russia. ABS prints first 10,000 Bibles 1817 First Scriptures for the military: 65 Bibles for the U.S. Navy Ship John Adams 1818 First publication in another language: English-Delaware Indian parallel Gospel of John 1820 ABS begins work in Africa, when funds for Scriptures are given to the American Colonization Society for the settlement of former slaves in Liberia 1822 First Bible House erected on Nassau Street, New York City 1823 Gift of $1,000 sent to William Carey to help his translation work in India 1829 Launching of effort to place Bibles in every home in America. This is the publication date of the McLin Family Bible. The reader of this document must draw his or her own conclusions as to how and where this Bible was obtained. It is interesting to me that the ABS published in 1995 a Contemporary English Version (CEV) of the Bible. I have a copy, which was sent to me, when I gave a donation. I had no idea how important the ABS had been until doing family research. There have been many other important dates for the ABS. For this printing I have stopped with 1829 since this document deals with our McLin Family Research. It should be noted that in its mission statement in 1816 the stated mission was, "provide the Holy Scriptures to every man, woman, and child in a language and form each can readily understand, and at a price each can easily afford".
