Grangeville Baptist Church March 16th 1895 Service by Pastor at regular hour 11 oclk a.m. after which conference was declared ready for transaction of buisness by moderator. Reading minutes of January 20th red and approved. Report of committee to specify charges under the head of Gross Immoral Conduct of Bro. A.J. Alford re- ported as follows, to wit: Whereas Bro. A.J. Alford did on Jany 25th 1889 engage in a personal combat against Mr. J.K. Womack with deadlly firearms in association with one Hardy Strickland and whereas the said Bro. Alford did pursue said Womack with deadly firearms and with threatnings and pro- fanity after the said Womack had been wounded by pistol shots from the hands of said Hardy Strickland and whereas the said Bro. Alford did attempt to enter the store house of Bro. J.M. Odom with threatnings and in pursuit of said Womack where he had fled and sought refuge for protection and further that whereas the said Bro. Alford did assent in a threatning way say that Mr. Womack could not be kept in the store house always for pro- tection. Therefore the Grangeville Baptist Church did on the 23d day of February A.D. 1889 and after the death of said wounded man J.K. Womack withdraw fellowship from Bro. A.J. Alford under the head & charge of Gross Immorality. Therefore your committee beg leave to report and place the following interpretation on the charge of Gross Immorality, viz: That Gross Immorality in a broad sense means any and all kinds of un- christian conduct but that in this special case it means in the Divine law "God Book, The Bible" aiding and assisting in the killing of J.K. Womack by pursuing and threatning the wounded man in profanity and snapping his gun at him as he fled and pursuing him and seeking said Womack life in his retreat within the walls of a house. All of which being unchristian conduct and therefore Gross Immorality (note: last two words are underlined). Submitted Dan'l R. Warren Jas. M. Odom W.T. Woodward Rev. S.S. [Typist note: Following is the Preamble, Names of Committees and Resolutions which all look to be in the hand of W.T. Woodward although he only signs the Preamble.] PREAMBLE We your committee appointed to formulate some plan on method as how to dispose of or relegate the membership of this church whose names are enrolled on our church record as members and have failed to attend church service here some for one year some for two years and others for a longer time. Cunningly without any visible cause and who have not assisted in any way by contributing means or help to the support of the church, her Pastor, or the cause of missions. Hence your committee having carefully deliberated on this subject matter and a method to relieve the church of this burden. Believing as we do that no one can occupy nutral grounds in the church. That they will be for or against its interest and that there names recorded on the church roll shows numerically the strength of the church and all names as enrolled must be transmitted by the church in to statistical report to the association to which said church is a member, helping to make out the general aggreegate of membership in the district and state. Therefore believing that the same is hurtful and misleading to a church and the cause we submit the following plan or method. 1st Resolved that we do not believe that it is in the Province of any church to force any one to join the church and after any proper and acceptable person has joined the church observing all of its ordinances, decorum and government there interest being identified with that of the church and the cause of the Lord Jesus Christ that they should be held by the church in good standing and fellowship and can not be expelled from the body. Resolved 2nd That all persons who are members of this the Grangeville Baptist who do not observe the church ordinances decorum and government shall be properly charged before the church and be disciplined for same. Resolved 3rd That any member who fails to attend the regular church service or sends a good valid cause for not attending for the space of six months will be held by the church as a violator and disinterested in its cause. Therefore the names of all such shall be suspended & placed on a roll for all like membership and not to be reported to the association with the class of active members. Resolved 4th That these resolutions shall take effect from its passage and that the church clerk shall notify all the members of this church of the passage of these resolutions who have not been in attendance for the last twelve months and that the names of all persons or members who have not been in attendance for the 12 mths. past shall not be report by the church to the Association.
