J.P. HARRINGTON 1900 J.P. Harrington was born in May, 1873 at Vernon, Alabama. His parents were A.L. and Bettie Guyton Harrington who made their living as farmers in a poverty stricken time and area. Bro. Har- rington was converted while living at Columbus, Mississippi in 1886 and later studied at Mississippi College at Clinton and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Bro. Harrington served as pastor at Cornith, Mississippi, Aberdeen, Mississippi, Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Crystal Springs, Mississ- ippi, before coming to the Amite Church. He married Miss Emma Sigrest in 1897 and his life was greatly influenced by Dr. J.L. Johnson, H.E. Ray of Corinth and W.G. Peugh of Aberdeen. Bro. Harrington died on November 27, 1946 at the age of seventy-three and with a life time of accomplishments in Miss- issippi and Louisiana. "A History of First Baptist Church, Amite, La." By: Ann L. Schilling and Jerry M. Windsor Rev. John Preston Harrington, 73, died early Wednesday mor- ning, November 27 at the family residence at 1186 Pecan Boulevard, after an illness of six months. A native of Vernon, Ala., Mr. Harrington was pastor of Baptist churches at Crystal Springs, Waco, Texas, Vicksburg, Corinth, and Louisville, Miss. He came to Jackson in 1927, and helped to organize the Park- way Baptist church. He was superintendent of the Old Men's Home for 12 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emma S. Harrington; two sons, Jack P. and Paul B. Harrington, both of Jackson; a daughter, Mrs. E.C., Beck of Hughes, Ark; a brother, J.A. Harrington of Lathrop, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. I.C. Miller of Meridian, Mrs. Brock West- brook of Caledonia, and Mrs. Emma Box of Sulligent, Ala. Funeral services were held from Baldwin funeral chapel at 10 a.m. Thursday, with Dr. W.D. Hudgins and Dr. W.A. Hewitt officiating. Interment was in Cedarlawn cemetery. Pallbearers were Emmett Dixon, Ray Baird, J.W. Bethune, Marion Dampeer, and J.T. Biggs and Earl Barron of Crystal Springs. "The Baptist Record"
