JOHN W. POWELL 1902 - 1904/07 - 1908/1912 - 1913 A Confederate veteran, having served as a Corporal in Co. E., 3rd (Wingfield's) La. Cav. from May 25, 1861 until paroled at Gainsville, Ala. May 12, 1865, he was a member of pioneer families of St. Helena parish. He was a son of Joseph Powell and Mildred Womack Powell and grandson of Lieut. Josiah Powell of Georgia. He was also a grandson of Abraham Womack and Elizabeth Burton Womack. He was a great-grandson of David Womack of GA (Revolu- tionary War Patriot) and Nancy Childress. Rev. Powell was a brother to Rev. William Powell, early Methodist minister of St. Helena Parish. United States Census for St. Helena Parish reveals the fol- lowing: In 1850, John W. is 7 in household of Joseph Powell. Joseph Powell married Mildred R. Womack on 1-17-1840. In 1860, John is 17 in home of Joseph Powell, age 43 and Mildred, 37. John had attended school during the year. Joseph owns $1,000 in real estate and $14,500 in personal property. In 1870, John Powell is head of household #84 in Ward 6. He is 25, a farmer with $500 real estate and $300 per- sonal property. Mary, his wife, is 21. In 1880, John W. Powell is household 227, 35, and a far- mer. Mary J., his wife, is 34 and his daughter, Lizzie, is 8 years old. In 1900, John W. Powell is household 286, born Oct. 1842, 57 years old and has been married 35 years. He was born in Miss., lives on a farm he owns and occupation is farming and preaching. His wife, Mary, was born Jan., 1846, and is the mother of one child. J.W. Powell married M.J. Woodward on August 19, 1865, in St. Helena Parish. Rev. J.W. Powell, born Oct. 2, 1842, died Dec. 19, 1914. Martha J. Powell, born Jan. 19, 1846, died June 27, 1914. Both are buried in the Strickland-Newman Cemetery in Ward 6.
