Hoffman June 3, 2013 Jeremiah Strickland was born in Johnston Co., NC abt.1760. He was the son of Samuel and Mary Strickland. In 17783 he married Elizabeth Gurley. Bond for the marriage was made in Johnston Co., NC on April 1, 1783. Bondsmen: Jeremiah Strickland, Benjamin Strickland (brother) and H. Lightfoot. Later that year, Jeremiah purchased 200 acres from his father Samuel Strickland with brothers Benjamin and Davis witnessing on 4 Nov. 1783. He was given money in the will of his father but it did not help much because he was declared to be insolvent for 1787 as of 29 Aug1787. His insolvency was not a permanent thing, because he was able to purchase 200 acres on the county line at Great Meadows on 8 Oct 1795. Jeremiah is found in the 1790 Census Federal in Johnston Country but not the 1800 Census (Source: Descendants of Matthew Strickland 1648-1696) Through Four Generations, by Forrest King, CG. William COOPER Senr. sold to Carlton COOPER and Rodney COOPER the "plantation where I now live" and two other improvements, all being on the west side of "river Tanchpho", the "loyest" settled by Jeremiah STRICKLAND in the year 1800, the other by John COCHREN in the year 1800; for $800. Wits.: Field P. HUNTER, William COOPER Junr. & James DURBIN. Jeremiah Strickland buys land on Josey Creek in St. Helena in 1811, then sells the land to Robert Gurley in 1812. By 1820, Jeremiah Strickland is dead. According to researcher Kenneth Landry Schaefer, the "Widow Stricklin" listed on the 1820 St. Helena Parish, LA Census was Elizabeth Gurley of Johnson Co., NC, daughter of Robert Gurley and widow of a Jeremiah Strickland, as shown by probate papers. KNEELAND for DANIEL SPILLER. In presence of F. CUMING J.P., J. SIMMS. 28-78: Mar. 20, 1812; JERREMIAH STRICKLAND of St. Helena Planter, for $1 in hand and $300 to be paid, sold to ROBERT GURLEY of sd. par., Planter, a tract of about 400 acres on Josey Branch bounded on SE by DANIEL RAINER, on the NW by ALEXR. FREELAND, according to survey made by J.C. KNEELAND for DANIEL SPILLERS. Rec. Mar. 28, 1812. 29-78: Mar. 20, 1812; JERREMIAH STRICKLAND sold to ROBERT GURLEY, for $100, a mare, 7 head of cattle and all his household furniture. Rec.
