The Odd Fellows trace their beginning to England and the name thus: "During the latter half of the 18th Century and the early part of the 19th Century the only people who formed societies, etc. were the aristocrats, barons, the elite, etc. That common laboring men should associate themselves together and form a fraternity for social unity and for fellowship was such a marked violation of the trends of the times they became known as "peculiar" or "odd". When legally incorporated the title "Odd Fellows" was adopted. (1) "The Order of Odd Fellows is a secret, benevolent and social society . . . the chief aim is to enable man to cultivate the higher spiritual elements of true fraternalism as designed by the Great Author of his being and to better qualify him for his rightful performance of his brotherly duties to his fellowmen."
