Tate and published by St. Helena Historical Association, 1993. Reprinted with permission. On March 13, 1993, the USS Montpelier was commissioned at Norfolk, VA. Attending to represent our Montpelier were Mayor and Mrs. Bryan Dykes, Mrs. Inez Tate, Bonnie McMillan, and Harry and Wilma Chand. Although named for Montpelier, Vermont, the re- sidents of all the Montpeliers were invited to participate. This is the third ship to bear this name - the first was during World War I, the second, a cruiser, served during World War II. This ship, a submarine of the LOS ANGELES class, carries a crew of 139, 14 officers and 125 enlisted men. The 360 foot long, 33 foot wide, 6,900 ton ship is able to achieve speeds in excess of 20 knots and depths in excess of 400 feet. **************
