CIVIL WAR 1861 - 1865 Participants (Union) - 2,213,000 Deaths in Service (Union) - 364,000 Participants (Confederate) - 1,000,000 Deaths in Service (Confederate) - 133,821 Authorative statistics for Confederate Forces not available. Estimated 28,000 Confederate personnel died in Union prisons. Last Union Veteran - Albert Woolson, died August 2, 1956, aged 109 years Last Conf. Veteran - Walter W. Williams, died December 19, 1959, aged 117 years. Above from Veterans Administration. St. Helena, as did neighboring parishes, saw many of its finest men involved in this war that often pitted brother against brother. Booth lists St. Helena Commands: "The St. Helena Rebels," and Greensburg is listed as having skirmishes on May 1, 1863, October 5 & 9, 1864; Williams Bridge (Grangeville) May 1, 1863; several at Amite River which probably some were in St. Helena. We are listing veterans from five sources. Possibly there are duplications or omissions. "St. Helena Parish Cemeteries", published by St. Helena Historical Assoc. Louisiana State Archives, Baton Rouge, La., compiled by Inez B. Tate. "The St. Helena Rebels", from the "Greensburg Imperial" dated Oct. 12, 1861, compiled by Charles Allen. "The St. Helena Rifles", a booklet by A.P. Richards, Confederate Veteran, published after his death in 1968 by Randall Shoemaker and Mr. Richard's daughter, Mrs. S.E. Johnson. "Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Louisiana Commands", compiled by Andrew B. Booth, Commissioner, Louisiana Records, published in 1920. From the last publication we noted phrases regarding different Veterans (not necessarily from St. Helena) - some sad, some quaint, some poignant, but all a commentary of the times. We share some of these with you: "36 when enlisted - he is an old man - not fit for duty"; "unwilling to attend drill - never answered name"; "enlistment for two years or the war by reason of Conscript Act passed April 16, 1862"; "took oath and went north with the Yankees"; "an A No. 1 surgeon and a great lady's man"; "drummed out of service"; "he fell nobly defending his country"; "drummed out for theft"; "carried the colors of the regiment in the field, age 17." Too, they could hire substitutes to take their place. Apparently this was fairly common as this was noted with some frequency in the books. We have no separate list of those who lost their lives in service. Many lost their lives on the battlefield, in hospitals or in prison. Many lost an arm, some both arms, or a leg. In reviewing the books, the places became so familiar; Manassas, Missionary Ridge, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Fort Hudson, Vicksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Rappahanock, Antietam, Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Appamattox Courthouse.
