Compiled and edited by Inez Bridges Tate and reprinted with permission. MAJOR NELSON M. SINGLETON, USA, RETIRED Born: 10 January 1913, at Jack, Louisiana, St. Helena Parish and raised there. Graduated: Greensburg High School 1931. Entered the Citizens Military Training Program at Camp Beauregard, La. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in the Army of the United States 20 October 1935. Placed on active duty with the Civilian Con- servation Corps. Served in CCC Camps in Mississippi, Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming until 1942 being assigned to the Infantry Replacement Training Center at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. Overseas Service: Thirteen months in the European Theater of Operations. Awarded the European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign medal with two battle clasps indicating credit for battle participation in two major engagements, Normandy and North France. Two and a half years Asiatic/Pacific Theater Campaign. Awarded the Asiatic/Pacific Campaign medal the Army of Occupation medal. My wife, Mavis, and our daughter, Judith, joined me for two years in occupied Japan. One year Korea. Awarded the Korea Service medal with one battle clasp, and Republic of Korea Presidential Citation. Graduate of the following service schools: The Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia; Infantry Officers Advanced Course; The Counter Intelligence Corps School, Fort Holabird, Maryland; C.I.C. Special Agents Course; The Coast Artillery School: Anti-aircraft Artillery and Guided Missile Branch, Fort Bliss, Texas; Nike Ajax Internal Guidance System Electronic Maintenance; The Air Defense Artillery School, Fort Bliss, Texas; Nike Hercules Internal Guidance System Electric System Maintenance. Other Decorations and Citations: Good conduct medal, American Defense medal, National Defense medal, Armed Forces Reserve medal. Other Stateside Assignments: Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Rucker, Alabama; Camp Roberts, California; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort McClellan, Alabama; The Presidio of San Francisco, California; Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota; Dyess AFB, Texas. Retired 28 February 1961 in the rank of Major. Was then employed by Hughes Aircraft Company as a Field Missile Technician A. Next with Boeing Air- craft Company as a Field Missile Technician, then with Line-Temco-Vought Electrosystems as a Electronic Test Technician. Retired from LTV Electro- systems 28 February 1978. Married Mavis Yarbrough 22 June 1940. We have three children, ten grand- children and two great grandchildren. SINGLETON IS FIRST LIEUTENANT World has been received from the war department that Nelson Mon- roe Singleton, son of Mr. and Mrs. N.H. Singleton of the Third Ward of this parish, who is stationed with the detachment Corps of Military Police at Camp Wheeler, Georgia, was promoted from Second Lieu- tenant Infantry Reserve to First Lieutenant Infantry, Army of the United States, effective September 14, 1942. 12 Mar. 1943 Lieutenant and Mrs. N.M. Sin- gleton of Camp Wheeler, Georgia, have been visiting relatives in this parish. Lieut. Singleton left Fri- day for Fort Custer, Michigan, to report to the PMG Advance School for an eight-week training course, after which he will return to Camp Wheeler. 24 Dec. 1943 Recent news from Lt. N. Monroe Singleton is that he in on duty at the American Embassy in London, England. * * *
