Compiled and edited by Inez Bridges Tate and reprinted with permission. Monroe Madison Travis was born and grew up on a farm in the Pine Ridge Community. He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1944. Monroe volunteered for the United States Navy at New Orleans on July 1, 1944 and served from 1944 - 1964. Service (vessels and stations served on) were: Naval Training Station, San Diego, California; Naval Amphibious Training Base, Coronado, California; USS Sevier (APA 223), USS Pine Island (AV-12); Commissary Store, Naval Station, Charleston, South Carolina; Commissary Store, Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida; Flag Allowance, Commander Naval Forces, Far East, USS George K. McKenzie (DD- 836); Military Assistance Advisory Group, the Hague, Netherlands; USS Truckee (AO-147) and Naval Station, Charleston, South Carolina. Monroe received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific Theater and World War II Victory Medal, and also Korean Service Ribbon. Monroe married Miss Teshie Hutchinson, his classmate. They live out of state now.
