D. McDonald A deep gloom was cast over this town and community last Friday when the sad intelligence reached here that Mrs. John D. McDonald had passed away that morning at 7 o'clock at Hotel Dieu in New Orleans. Mrs. McDonald had not been well for some time, and she had gone to the city before seeking treatment from the most noted physicians to be found, but her trouble seemed to baffle their skill and she has passed from among us forever in this life. She was the daughter of the late K. K. Thompson, a prominent figure in the history of St. Helena for many years. In 1888 she was most happily married to Rev. E. D. Schilling. To this union four children were born, Messrs. Thomas, Leon, Edward and Miss Ella Schilling. Death claimed him when they were all small children and the widowed mother was left to rear and train them, which duty was heroically performed, and they live today as monuments to a mother's love and tender care. Later she was married to Mr. J. D. McDonald, who, with two children, Mason and Lillian McDonald, survive to mourn their loss. She was a genuine Christian lady, and greatly beloved by all who knew her. Her love for her home and children was as boundless as the ocean, and there is much grief in the home because of the vacant chair which is left. The remains were brought up Saturday and carried to the Baptist church where the solemn funeral services were held in the afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. G. G. Thomas. Owing to the almost incessant rains interment was deferred until Sunday morning when she was laid to rest in our pretty little Cemetery beneath a bank of flowers and evergreens placed there by loving hands. *************************************************************************** File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/sthelena/obits/mcdnanni.txt
