He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and also served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. He was a graduate of Baylor University Law School and practiced law more than 45 years in the state of Texas. He was a member of Delta Theta Phi law fraternity. She enjoyed cooking and serving as a volunteer with Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa. Her primary enjoyment came from spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation at Pine Grove Methodist Church, Pine Grove, from 9 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2004, with Dr. Richard Blue and the Rev. Rand Guy officiating. Burial in church cemetery. Survived by her husband, Thomas G. "Tommy" Wells Jr. of Walker; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Shilling Griffin and Ruffin Griffin of Walker; granddaughters, Alaina Griffin Gilmore and Debra Griffin McGaughey, both of Walker; four great-grandchildren; five stepchildren, Steve Clack, Becky Martin, Patty Jarreau, Thomas G. "Tommy" Wells III and Tracey Fontenot; seven stepgrandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Ruffin Griffin, Jimmy McGaughey, Clyde King, Rex McDaniel, Michael Wells and Josh Martin. Honorary pallbearer is Chaplain (CPT) Bret J. Gilmore, serving in Tikrit, Iraq. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hilton Shilling; parents, E.A. "Ott" and Olevia King Durbin; and her only sibling, Beatrice Durbin Williams. "Bill" Rives of Natchez, Miss.; a sister and brother-in-law, Athalea and Tommy Wells of Walker; four grandchildren and their spouses, Michelle and Billy Brasseaux of Pine Grove, Rex and Sue McDaniel of Watson, and Tammy and Greg Lee and Will Rives, all of Natchez; four great-grandchildren, Cassidy Brasseaux, Brent McDaniel, Meighan Lee and Kyle McDaniel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
