Funeral services set for popular priests By LEONARD GRAY GOLDEN MEADOW - Funeral arrangements were completed Monday for pastors for two Catholic churches in St. Charles Parish, after they apparently drowned in a mishap during their fishing trip Dec. 6-7 near Golden Meadow in Lafourche Parish. Joint wake services are set tonight at Mary Queen of Vietnam Catholic Church, 5096 Willowbrook Drive, New Orleans East, from 5-6 p.m., with Mass at 6 p.m. and visitation after Mass. Msgr. John Nguyen Phuc, 43, pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Destrehan since 1990, and the Rev. Benedict J. Quang, 37, pastor of St. Gertrude Church in Des Allemands since 1999, were found Friday afternoon. Phuc's funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, with visitation tomorrow with Mass at 6 p.m. and visitation to 9 p.m. and visitation Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Quang's funeral service will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. at St. Gertrude Catholic Church, with visitation from 8-11 a.m. An archdiocese spokesman said nothing is yet planned for successors for the two popular priests. Phuc was located at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 7, 50 yards from their boat, which was discovered at midnight the night before. Quang was found 20 yards from the boat at 5 p.m. St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg C. Champagne guessed that Phuc drowned first, and Quang drowned while trying to rescue Phuc. "I'm speculating they were trying to maneuver in, and Father John was sitting on the back with the engine, while Father Ben was at the throttle." He continued that apparently, Phuc fell into the water and was almost immediately sucked down into the water and mud, over his head. Quang managed to stop the boat and jumped in with a life vest in his hand, trying to rescue his friend. Neither were able to swim, and both drowned, almost immediately. The water where the boat was found was only three to five feet deep, but mud beneath it ran two to four feet in depth. One life jacket was found nearby. The other was still in the boat. The priest kept a boat in Golden Meadow and departed on a fishing trip at about dawn Thursday. Their normal return time was 2 p.m. When Phuc failed to return in time for a 4:30 p.m. mass, the sheriff's offices in St. Charles and Lafourche parishes were alerted. Msgr. Phuc, a native of Vietnam, was ordained on May 14, 1983. He also has been the Dean of the St. John-St. Charles Deanery, one of 10 in the Archdiocese, since November 2000. He served as associate pastor at Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Westwego (1983-1986) and as associate pastor at St. Louise de Marillac in Arabi (1986-1988), when he was named administrator there.
