Lee, district attorney, Opelousas, St. Landry parish La., was born at Opelousas, Jan. 25, 1869; son of Henry L. and Julia L. (Bullard) Garland, the former of whom was a native of Virginia and practiced law at Opelousas throughout his active years. The paternal grandfather, Rice Garland, also was a native of Virginia, and a lawyer. Henry L. Garland, the father, represented his district in the Louisiana state senate in 1876. He died in 1908, but is survived by his wife at this time. To their union 5 children were born, namely: Marie C., widow of Laurent Dupre, a successful attorney of Opelousas; Virginia S., widow of Charles M. Thompson, successful farmer and clerk of court at Opelousas from 1888 to 1904; Charles F., now deceased was a practicing attorney at Opelousas; Henry L., now practicing law at New Orleans; R. Lee, the subject of this sketch. In the course of his education the latter attended Manhattan college, from which he graduated with the degree of B. A. in the class of 1887. Later he entered the law school of Tulane university, from which he graduated with the degree of LL. B. in the class of 1889. Within a short time after the completion of his professional education he established himself in offices at Opelousas and there began the practice of law, which he has since continued in the original location. In 1896 he was elected district attorney, and has since been successively re lected to succeed himself, being the present incumbent of that office. He is a member of the Catholic church. In April, 1903, Mr. Garland was married to Miss Helen Hession, who was born at Opelousas and is a daughter of Michael Hession, who followed the vocation of a farmer. He is now deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. R. Lee Garland 7 children have been born.
